From a situation of near zero in 1990, the US current account deficit seems likely to reach $870 billion or 6.5 per cent of GDP in 2006 and is forecast to increase even further. Untangling the US Deficit argues that while some experts consider this a sustainable level, others accept that correction must be made though they point out that halving the current deficit to around 3 per cent of GDP would place an intolerable burden on the US economy of over $2000 per head.
