This study shows how and why the largest British and German banks have pursued quite different strategies - one focussing on its domestic market and the other embracing an international strategy. It includes case studies of some of the largest European banks. Little work exists on this subject - no comparative analysis has yet been published. Most existing case studies concentrate either on a time-span that is too short to identify certain strategic patterns or focus too exclusively on specific business strategies (e.g. 'retail banking strategy'). It provides valuable information for regulators, central bankers, politicians, and policy-makers. It applies a methodology as yet unheard of in the study of European financial integration and the banking sector. This book studies major corporate developments at eight publicly listed banks in Britain and Germany and looks at their changing positions within the financial system, from the beginning of the Single European Market in 1993.
